A Virginian, Joseph Houston, settled in the area and received a land grant from the government in 1803. He laid out the town and named it Joeville. The population continued to grow, and in 1860; Joeville became the metropolis of Breckinridge County. Later, the name was changed to Cloverport by keelboat crews because of the clover that was so abundant on its banks. In 2004, the population was 1,262.

Hardinsburg, the seat of Breckinridge County, began as Hardin's Station in 1780, settled by William Hardin. The post office opened in 1803 as Breckinridge Court House or Hardinsburg. The population in 2004 was 2,429.

Irvington is a northeastern Breckinridge County town near the border with Meade County. It was established as a station on the Louisville/St. Louis/Texas Railroad in 1888, and named for Irvington, New York; the home of the railroad's chief engineer. A post office opened at the site in 1885 as Merino; named for the nearby Mt. Merino Seminary, and was renamed Irvington in 1888. The population in 2004 was 1,302.

Other Communities

Other communites in the county include Union Star, Stephensport, Garfield, Harned, Bewleyville, Custer, Hudson, McDaniels, McQuady, and Kingswood just to name a few. The county shares the historic community of Falls of Rough on Rough River with neighboring Grayson County and the community of Big Spring is situated on the point where three counties join: Meade, Breckinridge and Grayson.
